Formed in March 2009, the Hednesford Gardening Club’s main aim is to benefit the local community in any way we can. We are a small, informal group of like-minded amateur gardeners, of different ages and different backgrounds. The only criteria we had was that we all enjoyed each other’s company and we all “pulled together”.
We meet on a regular basis at each others’ houses to discuss forthcoming events and ideas we may have. To date we have been involved in the following:-
- Hednesford Town’s Christmas evenings. In 2009 we had a stall selling hand-made gifts, candles, tombola, lucky dip for children, “guess the weight of the cake” and home-made goods. The proceeds of the evening went to “My Heart in Cannock” appeal, for the British Heart Foundation, where we raised over £150. In 2010, despite the severe cold weather, we again raised over £100 for the appeal.
- With initial funding by Hednesford Town Council for plants, we cleared two raised beds in the town that had been neglected, supplied the plants and will voluntarily maintain them. These have been the target for anti-social behaviour since we planted, but we are determined to keep them attractive.
- Hednesford’s very first “GardenFest” on 22 May 2010. In conjunction with the Traders’ Association, we had a stall selling hanging baskets, bedding plants, seeds, cuttings, rhubarb, a raffle, children’s lucky dip, books and a free table for children to decorate pots and plant up their own seeds. The aim of this event was to bring people into the bottom end of town where many shops are boarded up awaiting regeneration. It was a very successful day, the proceeds of which will go towards our club inviting guest speakers to give talks on a variety of subjects, for the benefit of local people. It is hoped this will become an even bigger annual event.
- The Royal Wedding on 29 April 2011. We had a tombola and plant stall outside the library and from the proceeds we gave a donation to the Traders Association.
